Description
No. 39 is an 18th-century house located on the north side of High Street in Brightlingsea. The building is timber framed and plastered with ashlar lines, topped with a grey slate roof that features pierced ridge tiles and chimney stacks on both the right and left sides. It has two storeys and attics, with a rear range and two flat-headed dormers. The front facade includes a three-window range of vertically sliding sashes with glazing bars. The central door, dating from the 20th century, has a fluted surround, frieze, and a moulded flat canopy.
Inside, the house features 18th-century red brick fireplaces with iron soffit ties in the kitchen and one front room, along with an 18th-century firesurround that includes a patera and a mantel shelf. The open string staircase is adorned with turned balusters and mouldings. Other interior details include chamfered bridging joists and panelled doors with moulded surrounds.
