Description
No. 51 on High Street is an 18th-century house constructed of red brick, featuring double range red plain tiled roofs and external red brick chimney stacks on both the right and left sides. The building has a parapet with parapet verges and stands two storeys high with attics, including two later flat-headed dormers. A moulded brick band runs under the parapet, complemented by a central band. The façade has a five-window range of small-paned vertically sliding sashes with thick glazing bars, all set beneath gauged brick arches with keystones. The central entrance boasts a six-panelled door with a fluted surround, and there is an elaborate early 19th-century lacework cast iron porch with a flat canopy, likely made by the early foundry Wallis of Colchester. The rear door features a moulded lead porch with trefoiled edging. Inside, the front room has dado panelling, chamfered ceiling beams, and an 18th-century oval fire surround on the ground floor, along with an early 19th-century cast iron fire surround. The kitchen contains an 18th-century red brick fireplace with an iron soffit tie. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the house was home to Dr. E.P. Dickin, a historian of Brightlingsea.
