Description

This is a timber-framed hall house with right and left crosswings, dating back to the 16th century. It has been subsequently altered and extended, with a left-hipped gable range added in the 17th century, and various rear extensions. The right-hand extensions project to the rear of numbers 76 and 78 High Street. The roof is covered with red plain tiles, featuring a gable to the right and two hipped crossings to the left. A central chimney stack is located between the crosswings, with an off-centre stack to the right of the hall and a rear stack to the right wing. The building is two storeys high, with a varied arrangement of vertically sliding sash windows; 1:1:2:1 on the first floor and 1:1:2:2 on the ground floor, with different glazing patterns depending on the wing. The hall has 20th-century diamond-leaded casements. The left and central entrances have four-panel, two-light doors with simple surrounds and flat canopies. The right entrance has a six-panel door. The central range (number 82) retains a simple roof structure with two crown posts, a cambered tie beam, moulded bridging and ceiling joists in a ground floor room. At the time of the survey, access to the other dwellings within the building was not possible.
