Description
The High Lighthouse in Harwich is a disused lighthouse built in 1818 by architect Daniel Asher Alexander for General Rebow, with John Rennie the Elder as the contractor. It is constructed of yellow stock bricks with stone dressings and features a tall, nine-sided tapering shaft topped with a stone 'tent' roof that has a wide eaves overhang and a lotus finial.
The exterior showcases a tall cruciform plan chimneystack that rises from a stone corbel on the northwest side. The southeast side has three adjoining faces, with one recessed to form the light opening. These three faces create a symmetrical composition in the lower part, featuring a projecting stone slab canopy above a band of stone blind arches. Below this, there is a window and an entrance door on the 'first floor,' both framed with stone surrounds and a hood supported by consoles.
Irregularly placed windows for the internal staircase have small pane double-hung sashes, moulded hoods, and stone surrounds, all exhibiting a slight 'Egyptian' style. A flight of stone stairs leads up to the entrance, which has a wrought-iron handrail with forked balusters that have a serpentine profile. The entrance features a cantilevered stone slab, while a similar but simpler door surround at ground level has a pair of three flush panelled doors. Additionally, there is a circular stone curb around the base, which was formerly fitted with railings.
