Description
Goodwyns Monsey is a house and attached cottage located in Great Bentley, dating from the 16th century or earlier, with later additions and alterations. The building features a timber frame, with sections that are plastered and weatherboarded, and painted brick on the left side. It has red plain tiled roofs and external red brick chimney stacks on both the left and right sides, with an additional off-centre chimney stack on the right. The structure has two storeys, with a lower range to the left of the main building and a right gabled crosswing known as "Monsey." This crosswing includes a 20th-century extension that features an entrance door and a garage door on the right. The windows consist of 20th-century vari-light small paned casements arranged in a 2:1 pattern. There is a six-panelled door with a moulded surround and a flat canopy located between the two left windows. At the time of the last survey, there was no entry to Goodwyns, but it appears to have an inserted chimney stack and a ceiling in the original hall. The crosswing "Monsey" has part of its frame visible, showcasing a moulded bridging joist on the ground floor, a segmental head above the service door, jowled storey posts, a halved and bridled top plate scarf, and a two-armed crown post roof construction.
