Description

Summers Cottage is a house dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. It was formerly part of a larger house but now consists of two crosswings, with Summers Cottage in the north and Gable Cottage in the south. The structure is timber framed with brick infill on a rubblestone plinth, and it features a rubblestone rear wing. The roof is covered with old tiles, and the building has two storeys plus an attic. The gabled front faces the road, with a short bay to the right that is the remnant of a central range. The front has two mullioned and transomed casements, along with a two-light casement in the attic. The gable is adorned with scalloped bargeboards and a finial. The right bay is set back and includes a six-panel door beneath a lean-to open porch. The south elevation was rebuilt in brick around 1980. On the south elevation of the rear wing, there is a two-light window framed in chamfered stone and mullions, with a door to the left. A three-light leaded window is located on the first floor. The east gable elevation features brick-dressed casements. The north elevation retains remnants of first-floor oriels supported by moulded brackets. There are two diagonal brick flues with corniced caps centered on the crosswing.

Inside, the ground floor front room has a moulded stone arched fireplace with moulded stops and a four-centred arch. The interior showcases much exposed framing, including chamfered and stopped spine beams, and a moulded spine and cross beam, with the cross beam being narrower. The staircase is located in the short right bay, which shows evidence of jettying and has cut brackets to support the bressumer.
