Description

The Burnham-on-Crouch War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of stone and bronze and is situated on a raised platform between the High Street and the River Crouch, near the Grade II-listed buildings at 14 and 16 High Street and The Cabin Dairy at 15-17 High Street.

The memorial features a stone obelisk that rises from a four-sided plinth on a two-stepped base. On the upper part of the north and south faces of the obelisk, there are bronze laurel wreaths. The obelisk has a moulded foot with a cavetto and carved balls at each corner, resting on a narrow square base. The plinth has a square cap and a moulded foot.

The inscription on the obelisk reads: "TO THE/ MEMORY/ OF/ THOSE FROM/ THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES/ FOR/ THEIR COUNTRY/ IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918." The names of 98 individuals are cast in bronze and displayed on plaques attached to two faces of the plinth.

After the Second World War, an additional bronze plaque was added to the plinth, which states: "TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE/ FROM THIS PARISH/ WHO LOST THEIR LIVES DURING/ THE 1939 – 1945 WAR / (28 NAMES)/ KILLED BY ENEMY ACTION/ (10 NAMES)."

The memorial is set on a three-stepped, paved platform that includes raised stone planters at the two corners facing the High Street and benches.
