Description

Stows Farmhouse is a house dating from the 15th century. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a painted brick ground floor where the original jetty has been underbuilt. The roof is covered with red pantiles and features two gables on the right with dropped eaves between them, along with a single-storey outshot to the right. There are three red brick chimney stacks. The house is two storeys high and has a three-window range of vertically sliding sashes with glazed margins, all featuring moulded surrounds and pentice boards above. The entrance includes a two-panelled, two-light door with a moulded surround, a moulded frieze, and a flat canopy supported by brackets.

Inside, the farmhouse showcases three ranges of early 15th-century heavy timber framing. There is a chamfered segmental pointed head doorway leading to the first floor, with part of a similar doorway visible on the ground floor. The inglenook fireplace has been restored, and there are sunk chamfered and roll moulded bridging and ceiling joists. The ground floor displays run-out chamfers that indicate the original position of the jetty. Other notable features include jowled storey posts, a halved and bridled top plate scarf, and halved arch bracing in the roof over the stairs. The roof structure consists of finely moulded beams throughout, including a moulded ridge pole, side purlins, king posts with solid arched braces, and arched apex bracing. Architectural historian C. A. Hewett suggests that the farmhouse may date between 1443 and 1495, likely towards the earlier part of this range, especially when compared to the Queen's House at the Tower of London.
