Description
These stables, located approximately 8 meters west of Woodham Mortimer Place, date from the 16th or 17th century. They are constructed of red brick and feature a red plain tiled roof with two gabled dormers. The rear side is buttressed, and the building is one storey high with a loft.
On the left and right return gables, there are chamfered and moulded brick three-light windows with moulded labels above. The south face has three similar large three-light brick windows also with labels above. There are two chamfered and moulded brick doorways; the one on the right has been restored and features a timber frame and lintel. To the right is a five-board door, while the left has a vertically boarded door that is lapped. The stables have a moulded brick plinth and heavy chamfered bridging joists supporting the loft floor. At the time of the re-survey, there was no entry into the building. This structure is one of the few red brick barns from this period in Essex and is part of the original complex.
