Description
Black Cottages is a house that has been converted into a pair of cottages. It has origins dating back to the 15th or 16th century, with later alterations. The building features a red brick right return and a brick plinth, topped with a red pantiled roof that is hipped to the left and has a gablet. At the rear, there is a 19th-century outshot and a central red brick square chimney stack. The structure is two storeys high and has a two-window range with various casements, along with a pentice board to the right. The doors to the returns are from the 20th century.
Inside the right cottage (No. 2), notable features on the ground floor include a stop-chamfered bridging joist, an 18th-century panelled corner cupboard with curved shelf edges, original door hinges, and a brick floor. There is also a 19th-century cast iron grate with a wooden surround and overmantel. The cottage has vertically boarded doors with original ironmongery throughout, and the 18th-century stairs wind around the chimney stack. The first floor contains a cambered tie beam from the 15th or 16th century and jowled storey posts. A 19th or 20th-century copper is located in the outshot. The left cottage (No. 1) was not inspected during the resurvey.
