Description
Woodham Mortimer Place is a house that has been converted into offices and workshops for European Electronics Systems. The front range dates from the 18th century, while the rear range is from the 17th century or earlier, with later alterations and additions. The front range is constructed of gault brick and stucco, while the rear range is timber framed and plastered. It features a grey slate gambrel roof and has external plastered gault brick chimney stacks on the left and right, with three and two shafts respectively, as well as a rear red brick chimney stack with square attached shafts.
The building has a parapet adorned with three pierced panels and a moulded cornice. It is two storeys tall with attics, featuring three segmental-headed dormers with moulded surrounds and two-light casements. The window arrangement includes six small paned vertically sliding sashes on the first floor and five on the ground floor, all with moulded surrounds and friezes on the ground floor. The off-centre double doors consist of six panels with a traceried light above, supported by fluted columns and pilasters under a dentilled and moulded flat canopy.
To the left, there is a single-storey extension with a hipped roof, a moulded parapet cornice, and one window range. Set back to the right is a two-storey and attic range with a square attached red brick chimney stack, a three-light weatherboarded dormer, a central band, and a two-window range of small paned vertically sliding sashes. An oriel window on shaped brackets is located at the rear. The building has a complex plan and was once much larger, as indicated by Hearth Tax returns that record 30 hearths.
Inside, notable features include a stick staircase with a wreathed handrail, six-panelled doors with moulded surrounds (some featuring corner patera and reveal panels), panelled window shutters, moulded dados, and wainscots. There are also 18th and 19th-century fire surrounds, visible bridging joists in the rear range, and a large plastered chimney stack. Woodham Mortimer Place was the home of the Parker family in the 18th and 19th centuries.
