Description

Gorwell Hall is a house dating from the 17th century, with extensions added in the 18th century. It is timber-framed and was partly plastered and roofed with handmade red clay tiles, although much of the timber frame was unclad at the time of survey in May 1985. The original house comprises two bays facing southwest, featuring an 18th- or 19th-century internal stack at the left end. A one-bay extension to the rear creates a T-shaped plan, also of two storeys. An additional two-bay extension to the right, built in the 18th century, is single-storey with attics. This right extension has one 20th-century casement window and another within a dormer. No other windows or doors were present at the time of survey. The right extension has a gambrel roof, while the main range and rear extension have pitched roofs.

Inside the original core, features include jowled posts, heavy studding with primary straight bracing, an arched brace to the central tiebeam, and plain vertical section joists. The main range has a clasped purlin roof, which was rebuilt, and the rear extension has a butt-purlin roof. The right extension exhibits primary straight bracing, a chamfered transverse beam with run-out stops, plain vertical section joists in the right bay, and lacks a floor in the left bay.
