Description
Bourchier's Lodge is a house dating to circa 1600. It is constructed with a timber frame, partially plastered and with some exposed framing and 20th-century brick nogging. The roof is thatched. The building consists of a main 4-bay range facing northwest, with an axial stack positioned one bay from the left end and an external stack at the right end. A single-bay service wing is located at the rear of the second bay from the right end, with its own external stack. An early 19th-century extension runs along the rear left angle, with an internal stack at the junction. A 19th-century single-storey extension of red brick in Flemish bond is present in the right rear angle.
The house has two storeys and attics. The ground floor has three early 19th-century sash windows, of 16, 12, and 12 lights respectively, along with a 20th-century splayed bay window and a 20th-century sash window. The first floor has four early 19th-century sash windows, each with a 4 + 8 light configuration. A 20th-century door provides access.
Inside, the house features chamfered axial beams with lamb's tongue stops, and plain joists of horizontal section, although the rear wing has vertical section joists. Other structural details include jowled posts, arched bracing, trenched inside close studding, face-halved and bladed scarfs, and a clasped purlin roof. Original rebated floorboards are also present.
