Description

HAZELEIGH BURNHAM ROAD TL 80 SW (south side) 1/23 Coach-house/stable range 2 metres east of Hazeleigh Grange GV II

Range of 2 coach-houses and stables. Early C19. Gault brick in Flemish bond, roofed with slate. Central stable block of square plan facing N, with hayloft over, and single-storey coach-house to each side. Ground floor, 4 semi-circular lights with radial glazing bars, in brick arches. First floor, 2 similar lights, blocked and altered to plain rectangular lights in the original brick arches. Central halved stable door, and 2 pairs of plain coach-house doors. First floor, plain boarded door to hayloft, with ladder access. The stable block has a pyramidal roof, the coach-house wings have hipped roofs, all of shallow pitch. Described in a sale catalogue of 1817 as recently completed (Essex Record Office, D/DOp B.123/40). The 2 first-floor windows which have been blocked could be easily restored to their original form, taking those of the ground floor as patterns. The stable has original interior fittings. Included for group value.
