Description

This is a cistern dating from 1677, located against the west face of the west wall of the walled garden at Braxted Park. It is made of moulded lead and features three visible sides with rounded corners. The cistern has a moulded base and rim, with strapwork surrounding the panels on the left return and front, while the right return is blank and the rear is against the wall.

The left return panel includes corner emblems and a moulded achievement. On the front, there are seven panels: the first and third panels depict two men and a woman, possibly representing the Rape of Artemis; the fifth and seventh panels likely depict Artemis; the second and sixth panels show double achievements; and the fourth panel features "P.D.I." above an achievement. The strapwork is decorated with Putti and various motifs, and the moulded date of 1677 is located below the rim. Inside, there are three sections, with a plug chain attached at the rear left and two drain spouts at the base of the left return.
