2/54 Cistern adjoining the west face of west wall of walled garden q.v. 2/51 Braxted Park House

GV II

Cistern. Dated 1677. Moulded lead. A fine cistern with 3 sides visible. Rounded corners. Moulded base and rim. Strapwork surrounds to panels on left return and front, right return blank, rear against wall. The left return panel with corner emblems and moulded achievement. Of the 7 front panels, from left to right, the 1st and 3rd depict 2 men and a woman, possibly the Rape of Artemis, the 5th and 7th probably depict Artemis, 2nd and 6th double achieve- ments. 4th "P.D.I." above an achievement. Strapwork decorated with Putti and motifs. Moulded date 1677 below rim. There are 3 internal sections, a plug chain is attached rear left and 2 drain spouts to base of left return.
