Description

This property comprises a house, now two dwellings, located on Head Street, Goldhanger. The left-hand range dates to the 17th century, while the right-hand crosswing may be even earlier, dating back to the 16th century or before. The building has undergone alterations and additions in the 18th century and later. It is timber framed and plastered with batten decoration, with painted brick facing on the two crosswings to the right. The roofs are red plain tiles, and there is a large square brick chimney stack attached to the main range, along with external brick chimney stacks on the left of the main range and the left of the gabled crosswing.

The building has a complex plan, featuring a main range with a small, forward-gabled stair turret on the right and two right-gabled crosswings. It has two storeys and attics, with a 2:1:1:1 window arrangement of small-paned vertically sliding sash windows. The stair turret window is a two-light bay. A six-panelled door with a moulded surround and frieze is located on the main range, and a four-panelled door is on the left-gabled crosswing.

The interior of No. 3 contains significant quantities of re-used medieval timber, including stop-chamfered bridging joists, a restored inglenook fireplace, a cambered sunk chamfered tie beam, and a three-board door with moulded edgings and original ironmongery, including butterfly hinges. The roof is a side purlin roof constructed of reused, sooted timbers with halved and bladed scarfs, and a halved and bridled scarf to the side girt of No. 5.
