Description
Nos. 2 and 4 Fish Street are two dwellings that were originally three cottages, dating from the 17th or 18th century, with later alterations and additions. The buildings are timber framed and plastered, featuring zigzag and ashlar pargetting. No. 2 has a red brick facing and both buildings have red plain tiled roofs with three levels, including a rear crosswing on No. 2. There are three red brick chimney stacks visible from the road.
No. 2 is one storey with attics and has a four-light shop window with central glazing bars, a moulded surround, and a fascia above. To the right, there is a 20th-century glazed door set in a brick surround with a tympanum and brick arch. The two left ranges are two storeys high, featuring a window arrangement of four and two, with various small-paned vertically sliding sashes, sashes with glazing bars, and small-paned casements.
No. 4 includes a 19th-century hipped bay with red tiled roofing and small-paned glazing, likely a former shop window. The central entrance to No. 4 has a four-panelled door with a flat canopy supported by brackets, and the date 1750 is inscribed above. This attractive range of buildings is located at the corner of Fish Street and Head Street, in an area known as The Square.
