Description
Box Cottage is a cottage dating from the 17th or 18th century, with some alterations from the 19th century. It was one of the cottages used by Peter Du Cane when he relocated villagers from Braxted Park to Bung Row around 1825 to 1831 to enclose Braxted Park. The cottage is timber framed and plastered, topped with a red plain tiled roof that features two gabled dormers. There are red brick chimney stacks on both the left and right sides. The building has one storey, attics, and a cellar. It has a two-window range of 19th-century type casements with central glazing bars. The central entrance is a gabled open porch with a red tiled roof, leading to a boarded door. Inside, the cottage includes heavy chamfered bridging joists, vertically boarded doors with original ironmongery, and a reputed inglenook fireplace that is now boarded up. Additionally, there is a well located in the cellar.
