Description
The Laurels is a cottage dating from the 17th and 19th centuries, with later alterations and additions made to the rear in the 19th century. It was one of the cottages used by Peter Du Cane when he relocated villagers from Braxted Park to Bung Row around 1825 to 1831 to enclose the Park. The cottage is timber framed with a red brick front face featuring a dentilled eaves cornice, while the return walls are plastered. It has a red plain tiled gambrel roof and red brick chimney stacks on both the left and right sides. The building is one storey with attics and includes two gabled dormers. There are two 2-light small paned casements and a central part-glazed gabled porch with a board door that has two lights. Inside, the cottage retains many 18th-century features, including two rear staircases with centre newels. All doors are made of beaded vertical boarding with wrought iron hinges and catches, and the rear rooms have klompjie brick floors.
