Description

Nos. 16, 17, and 18 on The Square are a row of 18th-century dwellings featuring shop fronts on the ground floor. The buildings are timber framed and weatherboarded, with a brick plinth and a red plain tiled roof that has an outshot at the rear. They have a moulded and dentilled eaves cornice and two red brick chimney stacks. The structures are two storeys tall and have a five-window range on the first floor, showcasing small paned vertically sliding sash windows with moulded surrounds.

On the ground floor, starting from the left, No. 16 has a window similar to those on the first floor, with steps leading up to two six-panelled doors located to the right and left of a central 18th-century small paned bow shop window. This section features a moulded and dentilled frieze, and a flat canopy that extends over it. No. 17 has a tripartite small paned vertically sliding sash window with a moulded surround, and steps with railings leading to a four-panelled two-light door, also with a moulded surround and frieze, and a dentilled soffit beneath the flat canopy. No. 18 has a forward bay with a frieze and dentilled eaves to the flat canopy, flanked by two three-light shop windows, and a central doorway that is boarded at the time of re-survey.
