Description
Chigwell Lodge is a house built in the late 18th century. It is constructed from stock bricks and features a roof made of slate and tiles. The building has a double pile plan and two chimney stacks on each side wall. It stands two storeys tall with attics. The front elevation is notable for its central door, which has six fielded panels and is framed by a doorcase supported by two Doric columns and topped with an open pediment. A fanlight above the door has cast iron radiating tracery and garlands. There are four double-hung sash windows with twelve lights on the ground floor and five similar windows on the first floor. The building has a cornice and a parapet, and the mansard roof features three flat-roofed dormers with six lights each. The lower pitch of the front roof is covered with old grey slates, likely of Cornish origin, while the upper pitch is clad in blue Welsh slates. The rear roof is finished with handmade red clay tiles, and stone copings adorn the gables. A simple bell-turret from the 19th century is located on the middle dormer. The overall design presents a symmetrical elevation, with a later single-storey extension to the southwest that has a hipped roof covered in blue slate.
