Description
Great West Hatch is an early 19th-century house that has been converted into a residential institution. It is constructed of stock bricks with stucco dressings, and while the roof is not visible behind the parapet, it is likely made of slate. The building features two parallel ranges that are aligned approximately north-south, with the rear range projecting on both sides to create a broad T-plan. There are chimney stacks at both ends of the front range and in the southwest angle.
The house has two storeys and a basement. The central entrance consists of half-glazed double doors topped with a plain fanlight, and is framed by a porch supported by two Doric columns and pilasters, featuring a fluted architrave with rosettes, all leading up to five stone steps. The front facade includes four double-hung sash windows, each with 12 lights, set under flat arches made of gauged brick. On the first floor, there are five similar windows, with the central window set in a shallow recess and topped by a round arch of gauged brick. The entrance door and inner windows project slightly forward from the rest of the facade. A stucco string course runs along the first-floor level, complemented by an enriched cornice and a parapet that has three recessed panels in the middle.
The rear range mirrors the front in terms of the string course, cornice, and parapet, and features four dummy window recesses in the west elevation of each wing. At the northern end of the rear range, there is a bow containing three curved double-hung sash windows with 16 lights, located on the ground floor only.
