Description
Hales Farmhouse is a late 16th century timber-framed and plastered house, standing two stories tall. It features a gabled peg tile roof and a slated lean-to at the rear. The farmhouse has an in-line transitional plan consisting of four bays, which includes a wide cross-passage or smoke bay and the hall, originally part-floored. The front elevation has a modern gabled porch with a peg tile roof that fronts the entrance door, which is in its original off-centre position. The windows are mainly 19th century wooden casements with horizontal glazing bars. There is a 17th century stack that has been rebuilt above the roof and an altered stack at the south end. Remnants of service door jambs and heads can be seen, along with a diamond mullioned window. The roof structure includes side purlins with curved wind-bracing and halved and bladed scarf joints in the top plate.
