Description

Sawkins Farmhouse is a house dating back to the 16th century, with a remnant wall from the 14th century at the rear and an 19th-century red brick crosswing extension. The 16th-century core has an 18th-century brick facade and moulded brick eaves, topped with a red plain tiled roof. The house has a crosswing to the left, with a 1:3 window range to the first floor and a 1:2 window range to the ground floor. The crosswing features some 19th-century, 3-light casements and late 19th-century vertical sliding sash windows. The ground floor of the crosswing has a canted bay with a red plain tile roof. The facade to the right of the brick facing is plastered and weatherboarded. The rear return contains an original 14th-century jowled storey post. A 20th-century red tiled, hipped porch features a 20th-century panelled door and side light. The original red brick chimney stack to the left has fireplaces dating from circa 1550, with a 3-centred moulded brick design on both the ground and first floors. Above the first-floor fireplace is a moulded plaster Tudor Rose. The interior includes stop-chamfered bridging joists and a framed staggered side purlin roof, with bridled scarfs to the top plates. A record indicates a hall was present on the site around 1612.
