Description
The Corbett Theatre, part of the E15 Acting School, is a 15th-century aisled barn that has been rebuilt as a theatre. It features a timber-framed structure with walls made of red brick and flint rubble, topped with a slate roof. The building consists of five bays aligned approximately northwest to southeast. It has jowled posts, straight tiebeams, and arched braces connecting the arcade plates and tiebeams, with no aisle shores present. The arcade plates have edge-halved and bridled scarfs, and the southeast end of the southwest arcade plate has been repaired using old timber. The arcade posts are set on plinths of red brick with concrete coping. The roof is a queen strut design, hipped at the southeast end and half-hipped at the northwest end over a short extension. A single-storey foyer and bar, built in the 20th century, are located to the southwest. The timber frame was originally located in Ditchling, Sussex, and was moved to its current site around 1967, where it was re-erected with new walls and the foyer/bar extension. Measured drawings of the timber frame are available with planning application W/CHIG/181/65, on file with Epping Forest District Council.
