Description
The funeral chapel at the entrance of Loughton Burial Ground was built in the late 19th century. It features a timber-framed structure that is plastered, with the frame exposed both externally and internally, resting on a base wall made of gault bricks arranged in English bond. The chapel has two bays aligned approximately northeast to southwest. There are double doors at each end, each accompanied by a pair of round-headed lights above. Each side wall also contains two similar pairs of lights. The southwest end has plain glass, while the other windows feature stained glass with a leaded geometrical pattern. The ends of the chapel have curved bracing, and the side walls exhibit ogee-curved bracing. The exterior is plastered with a ridged, arrowhead pattern, while the interior is plain. Inside, there is an arch-braced collar that clasps the side purlins, and the bargeboards are decorated with quatrefoil piercings. The floor is laid with red and black tiles arranged in a diaper pattern.
