Description

Hatfields (E15 Acting School) is a house built in the late 18th century, with an extension added in the 19th century. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with scored joints, using stock bricks at the front and red/purple bricks elsewhere. It has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles, while the 19th-century extension is roofed with slates. The house has a double pile plan featuring a central entrance and stair hall, with two chimney stacks located in each side wall and at the gable ends, facing northeast.

To the southeast, there is a late 19th-century service extension. The building stands two storeys high with attics. The central entrance features a glazed door framed by a reeded wooden doorcase with an open pediment and stucco pilasters, accessed by four stone steps. There are four double-hung sash windows with 16 lights each, set under segmental arches of gauged brick, dating from the late 18th century. On the first floor, there are five similar windows. The building has string courses above the ground floor and first floor windows, and a parapet.

There are three flat-roofed dormers with casement windows, each having 12 lights. The overall design of the building is symmetrical. A lead rainwater head, inscribed with "AW 1795," is present. The house features double gables on each side with mansard roofs. Inside, there are complete internal folding shutters in front of the windows on both floors, and the staircase has a pine rail with slender turned balusters, although the post at the bottom is damaged.
