Description

TQ 49 SW CHIGWELL HIGH ROAD WEST SIDE 4/7 Christies

GV II Pair of attached houses, C18, combined. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 2 parallel ranges aligned approx. N-S, aspect E, the rear range narrower. 2 axial chimney stacks in each range. 2 storeys. Ground floor, 6-panel door in simple doorcase with shallow hood on carved brackets, 6 double-hung sash windows of 12 lights (one window larger than the others) and one of 8 lights. First floor, 6 double-hung sash windows of 12 lights and one of 8 lights. Chimney stacks cement rendered or plastered. Against rear wall, 2 lead pumps in wooden cases, C18. In both, the front of the tank is exposed and ornamented. One has 5 rosettes and a reeded spout. The other has embossed: W and a plain spout. The initials and date probably record a M T 1762 marriage (W for the surname) and the construction of the house. The other pump would have served the second house. As artefacts these are rare survivals, and together and in context with a pair of houses they are particularly significant.
