Description

Christies is a pair of attached houses from the 18th century, constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior, topped with handmade red clay tiles. The buildings consist of two parallel ranges that run approximately north-south, with the rear range being narrower. Each range features two axial chimney stacks. The houses are two storeys tall.

On the ground floor, there is a six-panel door set in a simple doorcase with a shallow hood supported by carved brackets. This is accompanied by six double-hung sash windows, each with 12 lights (one window is larger than the others), and an additional window with eight lights. The first floor has six double-hung sash windows with 12 lights and one with eight lights. The chimney stacks are either cement rendered or plastered.

Notably, against the rear wall, there are two lead pumps housed in wooden cases from the 18th century. The front of each tank is exposed and decorated; one features five rosettes and a reeded spout, while the other is embossed with the letter "W" and has a plain spout. These initials and the date likely commemorate a marriage in 1762 (with "W" indicating the surname) and the construction of the house. The second pump would have served the other house. As historical artifacts, these pumps are rare survivals and are particularly significant in the context of the pair of houses.
