Description
Hainault House is a house built in the late 19th century, designed in the Victorian Gothick style. It features yellow brick with stone dressings and a slate roof. The building has a complex layout, primarily consisting of a main range aligned approximately north-south, with a crosswing to the south. The south elevation includes a semi-octagonal two-storey bay, while the north elevation has a semi-circular two-storey bow.
There is a glazed door in a porch adorned with foliate capitals. In front of the crosswing, there is a tripartite double-hung sash window with three sets of two lights, supported by columns and foliate capitals in a square bay. To the right of the door, three double-hung sash windows with two lights are situated under a glazed canopy. On the first floor, the bay of the crosswing is canted, featuring double-hung sash windows with three sets of two lights and cast iron railings on its roof. Additionally, there are four double-hung sash windows with two lights, each topped with stone segmental arches, and stone copings on the gables. According to Stott, Hainault House dates from 1870 and was built for a soap manufacturer named Knight. It was acquired by Chigwell School in 1917.
