Description
Proctors and Dickens Cottage is a pair of attached houses from the 18th century located on the west side of High Road in Chigwell. The buildings are timber framed and weatherboarded, with some areas covered in plaster, and they are topped with handmade red clay tiles. They are aligned approximately north-south and have two axial chimney stacks, one in the middle of each house. There is a narrower rear range with a double-pitched roof that is contemporary to the main structure, along with single-storey rear extensions.
Both houses are two storeys tall. Proctors features a four-panel door with a shallow hood and a projecting window to the south, which was formerly a shop window supported by three turned Palladian balusters. To the north of the door, there is one original window with two fixed lights and a wrought iron casement, showcasing rectangular leaded panes. On the first floor, there are two similar windows. Dickens Cottage has a six-panel door with the top panels glazed and a shallow hood, along with two 18th-century windows on each floor that match those of Proctors. A notable feature is the original wooden gutter lined with lead at the northeast end, which is a rare survival.
