Description
Newbarns is a house built in the late 18th century. It is constructed of stock brick with red brick dressings and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The building is in an L-plan layout, with the main range oriented approximately north-south and an east-facing aspect, and a service wing extending from the northern end. There are two chimney stacks: one at the junction of the main range and service wing, and another at the western end of the service wing. Beyond the service wing, there is a single-storey extension with weatherboarding, topped with a roof of red clay pantiles. To the south of this extension, there is a lean-to that creates a catslide roof.
The house has two storeys with attics. The east elevation features a central six-panel door, with the top panels glazed, set within a simple Doric porch with a pediment. There are four double-hung sash windows with 12 lights on the ground floor, each with flat arches made of gauged red brick, and five similar windows on the first floor. A string course runs at first-floor level, and there are giant pilasters at the corners of the building. The roof is topped with a parapet and includes three flat-roofed dormers, each with double-hung sash windows of six lights and a hipped mansard roof. The south wall was rebuilt in the 20th century.
