Description
TL 50 NE FYFIELD ONGAR ROAD 5/63 Elmbridge School GV II
School. Built 1884, by West Ham education authorities for persistent truants. Yellow stock brick with red brick dressings. 3, 2 and 1 storey. Square courtyard plan. South-east front is 5 bays in width, with extra bays set back on either side, which are both of 1 storey and attics. Bays 2 and 3 have tall Dutch gables with stone trim and finials, both side bays have similar gables. The centre range has fully hipped roof, clay tiled with crested ridge bonnets and a parapet, both end bays are hipped. 6 chimneys visible from South east, all red brick, with pilastered shafts. 14 window range, at first floor, of vertical sliding sashes with glazing bars, under segmental and gauged brick arches. Red brick first floor band, moulded of 6 courses. Ground storey has 2 doors, both with pedimented brick surrounds, with circular windows in each pediment. Both end bays have semi-hexagonal bay windows with 3 vertical sliding sashes with glazing bars, to each, and low pitched leaded roofs. Centre block has 8 window range, vertical sliding sashes, set in pairs. Red terra-cotta date tablet in left hand pediment. Central main roof has one dormer beneath a leaded clock turret, surmounted by a leaded cupola and wind vane.
