Description

The Former Infant School, built in 1899 for the London Board Schools, is a single-storey building constructed from stock brick with engineering brick and red brick dressings, topped with tile roofs. The design is near symmetrical, featuring three gabled wings, with the left and right wings set forward. The west elevation facing Sandy Hill Road showcases triple sash windows with glazing bars and a central top light adorned with decorative glazing bars. These elements are complemented by red brick dressings and rendered keystones, all beneath an applied shaped gable in red brick with a rendered shaped head and conventional gable, where the infill is pebble dash rendered.

The central wing features three tall identical sash windows with glazing bars, positioned under a curtailed flat-topped gable with a half-hip above. This gable is made of fine red brick and includes a central stone plaque inscribed with "Bloomfield Road School" and a monogram below. The entrance is marked by paired doors beneath an overlight to the right, with paired sash windows to the left. The north entrance is framed by a stone doorcase with shallow flanking pilasters, beneath a tablet inscribed "INFANTS." The north wing has a pair of tall sash windows with glazing bars beneath small pebble dash rendered gablets.

The east elevation mirrors the treatment of the Sandy Hill Road elevation, with the southern wing featuring a small tripartite window with central decorative glazing bars on a moulded brick base. Between the wings are gabletted bays with three tall paired sash windows, one being a single light. The right-hand entrance is also beneath an overlight. Inside, the classrooms are tall and airy, with part-exposed roof trusses.

This building was formerly used as a Woolwich Polytechnic building and has since been converted into homes.
