Description

The Roman Catholic Church of St Peter was built in 1843 by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, with a later addition of a chancel. The church comprises a nave and aisles, but lacks a clerestory. The chancel is an extension of the nave, built to the same height. It is constructed of multicoloured stock brick with stone dressings, and the window tracery is in the Decorated style. The building features stepped buttresses to the aisles, and angle buttresses at the east end. The elaborate, multi-planed moulded doorway is located in the west bay of the south aisle, with a smaller door at the west end. Large windows are present at both the east and west ends.

Inside, the nave consists of five bays with sharply pointed arches supported on quatrefoil piers. A wood gallery is situated at the west end. The church contains a traceried stone reredos.

The Roman Catholic Church of St Peter forms a group with numbers 103 and 105, which was formerly a Roman Catholic school.
