Description

Connaught Barracks, located on the east side of Grand Depot Road in the south western part, consists of two early 19th century buildings flanking a mid 19th century building set back between them. The early 19th century blocks, known as the north and south blocks, are two storeys tall with a basement and feature seven by seven windows. They are constructed of multicoloured stock brick, with the outer bays projecting slightly. The roofs are low pitched and hipped, covered with slate, and have eaves soffits over a brick dentil cornice. A stone band runs along the first floor cills.

The south block, referred to as E house, has gauged brick arches over sash windows with glazing bars, most of which have been renewed. The left first floor window is a two-light design. The outer ground floor windows are wider and segment-headed, featuring radial bars in the heads. The two right first floor windows are blocked, and there is a modernised door in a concrete surround located in the third bay from the right. Cast iron area railings are present.

The north block, known as Connaught House, also has gauged brick arches over sash windows with glazing bars, most of which have been renewed. The outer ground floor windows are three-light sashes; the left window is under a segmental gauged brick arch, while the right window is under a stone lintel. The central door consists of four fielded panels and two flat panels, with an additional two fielded panels in the frame above, flanked by sidelights and topped with a cornice head and a blocked fanlight, all under a segmental gauged brick arch.

The centre block, referred to as D house, is two storeys tall with a basement and has eleven bays, with the centre bay being wider and featuring three grouped windows. The end bays are set back. The roof, which is of moderate pitch, has been renewed in corrugated iron. This block also features gauged brick arches over sash windows with glazing bars and is constructed of multicoloured stock brick. An enclosed, pedimented central porch has a modernised door with a fanlight and sidelights.
