Description
This is a late 19th-century school building, dated 1874, constructed of red brick with blue bands and chequering. It has a tile roof with three vent finials along the ridges. The building is single-storeyed and comprises a right-hand wing gabled to the street, featuring elaborate brick patterning in the end wall. Above the window is a stone panel with four quatrefoils and a clock. The window itself has five tall sashes with stone sills and lintels; the central sash is flanked by small stone columns with moulded caps and bases set into a stone pier. A rear wing has single and three-light sash windows with the top halves barred, situated above a moulded brick string course. A small chimney stack to the left is ornamented with stone bands inscribed "BUILT/ANNO D.1874". A central timber bell-cote with a steep, shingled roof and base supports an iron weather vane, also dated 1874. A small projecting bay to the left, with bargeboards to its gable, has a three-light sash window and double doors set at an angle. Cast-iron railings, dating to the same period, enclose the playground, with octagonal corner and gate shafts featuring moulded caps.
