Description
Fox Cottage is a house that dates back to the 15th century and was extended in the 20th century. It has a timber frame, is plastered, and has a roof made of machine-made red clay tiles. The building consists of two bays that are aligned approximately east to west, featuring a late 16th-century chimney stack on the south wall of the western bay. There is a south extension from the eastern bay, which is a 20th-century addition that forms an L-shape, along with a single-storey extension that has a hipped roof, also from the 20th century.
The cottage is single-storey with attics. On the west elevation, the ground floor includes leaded French windows within a tiled gabled porch and three leaded casement windows. The first floor has two similar windows, one of which is located in a flat-roofed dormer, all dating from the 20th century. Some of the framing is exposed internally, and there are jowled posts. The south wall plate has been severed to allow access to the 20th-century extension. The longitudinal joists are lodged and have a heavy square section, joined to the building beam with central tenons. There is a trimmed stair trap in the southeast corner, and in the northeast corner, the original joists have been replaced by thinner joists from the 19th century. The hearth is faced with 20th-century brick, but original brickwork can be seen from the rear inside the 20th-century extension. The roof is fully lathed and plastered internally.
