Description

Hillside is a house that dates back to the early 16th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 20th centuries. It features a timber frame that is plastered and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The house has three bays facing north and was extended to the left by one bay in the 18th century, with an axial stack located at the junction. It stands two storeys high.

On the ground floor, there are three late 19th-century bays with sash windows arranged in a 2-6-2 light pattern. The first floor includes one 19th-century horizontal sash window with 12 lights and another late 19th-century sash window with 6 lights. The entrance features a four-panel door topped with a simple hood supported by profiled brackets. The roof is hipped at the left end and hipped with a gablet at the right end. Original sprockets can be seen below the eaves at the front, rear, and right end.

The original structure includes jowled posts, heavy studding with curved braces that are trenched to the outside, chamfered axial beams, and plain joists of horizontal section that are jointed to them with soffit tenons and diminished haunches. There is a trimmed stair trap in the rear left corner of the right bay. Some wattle and daub infill was still present during a survey in October 1984, while the house was undergoing renovation. The roof features a crownpost design with arched axial bracing.

The left extension of the house has thinner studding, primary straight bracing, unjowled posts, an axial beam with joists of vertical section, and a clasped purlin roof. Inside, there are two large wood-burning hearths made of 0.23 metre brickwork, positioned back to back.
