Description

Owl's Hall Farmhouse is a house dating from the mid-16th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is timber-framed, with plaster infill and a roof of handmade red clay tiles. The farmhouse originally comprised four bays facing northeast, with a central chimney stack. A 20th-century L-shaped extension has been added to the left end, extending to the rear, and a gabled extension sits in front of the stack. The building is one storey high, with attics. The ground floor has five 20th-century casement windows. The first floor has four more casement windows, including two within gabled dormers. There is a 20th-century door set in a recessed porch. The timber frame reveals jowled posts and close studding. To the left of the stack, a binding beam is chamfered and has step stops. It is connected to heavy, plain horizontal joists using soffit tenons with diminished haunches, although in the left bay these joists have been replaced. The roof is a crownpost construction with axial bracing, although the rafters have been replaced with softwood. A large wood-burning hearth has been partly rebricked. To the right of the stack, a moulded binding beam and axial beams are present, along with chamfered horizontal joists; these also have lamb's tongue stops.
