Description

The Scheregate is the surviving medieval gateway within the town wall. It now incorporates a 17th-century house built into the wall, with the remainder of the house forming Nos 6a and 6b, Sir Isaac’s Walk. A wide entry with a flight of steps leads through the house, accessed from a broad passageway rising from St John's Street. Houses numbered 1 to 4 are closely built alongside the structure above the entry, and No 1 Eld Lane defines the east side of the entry. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with a brick plinth flanking the steps. The upper storey projects on the north side, and the tiled roof is hipped. Timber framing is visible in the roof of the entry. The Scheregate is part of a group that includes No 1 Eld Lane, The Purple Dog, 42 Eld Lane, and Nos 1 to 4 (consec).
