Description

The Church of St Andrew is a Grade I listed parish church located on Church Lane in Marks Tey. The church features a nave, a west tower that is timber-topped and vertically boarded, complete with a parapet and spire, a chancel, and a modern addition to the north. The nave has Romanesque origins and is constructed from septaria and indurated conglomerate, with Roman brick window quoins at the southeast corner. It includes two windows in the perpendicular style. The roof is ridged and gabled, covered with peg tiles, and has stone-coped gables topped with a finial cross. The return quoins of the nave are made of Roman brick, with one southeast quoin featuring vertical freestone 'longs' and Roman brick 'shorts' in a Saxon or Saxo-Norman style. Above the south door, there is a Romanesque tympanum set over an oak lintel. The chancel is built from freestone, Roman brick, and some indurated conglomerate, also featuring a stone-coped gable and finial cross, with a ridged and gabled peg-tiled roof. The priests' door dates from the 14th century and has wave moulding between two windows, each containing two trefoiled lights beneath a trefoiled head light. The windows are straight chamfered with scrolled hoodmoulds and the structure is angle buttressed. The south porch is made of timber and is set on red brick walls from the 17th century, incorporating earlier timber components, and features chamfered diamond-set mullions.
