Description
Marks Tey Hall South Barn, formerly known as the Barn south of Marks Tey Hall, dates from around 1400. It features an exposed timber frame with brick nogging on the south side, consisting of three bays and two storeys. The roof is peg-tiled with a ridge and gables, and some full-height windows were added on the south side during the 20th century. Inside, the barn has a complete crown-post roof, with main posts that are jowled at the first floor and eaves heights. Although the first floor has been partly removed, it is supported by heavy binding joists and longitudinal bridging joists, which have housed soffits and shouldered tenons, similar to the common joists and side girts. Originally, there were two shuttered windows in each bay, one on the north and one on the south, with the sliders for the bases of the shutters still in place. The binding joists at each end are supported by heavy arch braces. The original purpose of the barn is uncertain, but it was fitted out as a granary at some early date.
