Description
This is an 18th-century milestone located 80 meters east of Whites Bridge in Galleywood. Made of limestone, it has a roughly square shape with a slightly domed top. The face of the milestone is inscribed with 'London 26'.
Historically, this milestone is part of a series of five erected by the Essex Turnpike Trust to indicate distances to London, situated between Margaretting and Great Baddow. All these milestones are depicted on a large-scale map of Essex created by John Chapman and Peter Andre, published in 1777.
Milestones are significant as they reflect historical road use, and for a milestone to be listed, it must remain in its original position and be largely intact. This milestone is a good example from the 18th century, still standing in its original location with a clearly legible inscription.
