Description
This is a milestone located 12 metres northwest of 9 Bank End Cottages, dating from the 18th century. It is made of limestone and has a roughly square shape with a slightly domed top. The face of the milestone is inscribed with the word 'London', although the distance to London below that inscription has eroded over time.
This milestone is part of a series of five that were erected between Margaretting and Great Baddow by the Essex Turnpike Trust to indicate distances to London. Milestones like this one are significant as they provide important information about road use and must remain in their original position and largely intact to merit listing. This example is well-preserved, with part of its inscription still clearly legible.
