Description

Dukes House is a manor house located in Roxwell, with historical references dating back to the Domesday Book. The current structure was built in the 16th century and underwent alterations and additions in 1666 by Thomas Arthur Crush. It is said that workers on the roof witnessed the Great Fire of London. The house features cross wings on the north and south ends, along with 17th-century gabled additions on the west side. The east side has been largely altered, showcasing 20th-century windows and imitation timber-framing. Despite these changes, the house maintains its original shape and presents a picturesque appearance. It has two storeys and attics, with 20th-century casement windows featuring leaded lights. The roof is tiled. Notable external features include three original chimney stacks, each with three octagonal shafts set on rectangular bases adorned with a deep band of moulded brick quatrefoil ornamentation. Two of the stacks have spurred caps, while one stack has been rebuilt to match the original design.
