Description

This is an 18th-century timber-framed and plastered house, renovated in the 20th century and decorated with panel pargetting. It is located on The Green in Writtle and comprises two properties, numbers 44 and 46. The house has two storeys and a four-window front, featuring 19th-century double-hung sash windows with vertical glazing bars. Number 44 has an early 20th-century double bow shop front. Number 46 has a doorcase with a semi-circular fanlight containing fan glazing bars, narrow panelled pilasters, and an open dentilled pediment supported by brackets, a design similar to number 35. The roof is tiled, with a mansard, double-pitched form and four segmental-headed dormers on the front, topped by a wood modillion cornice to a box gutter. A small wing extends to the rear. The listed buildings around The Green form a group, with numbers 8, 10, 58, 52, and 25 identified as buildings of local interest.
