Description

The Writtle Bowling Club boundary walls are a walled garden dated 1656, located at the corner of Roman's Place and the Churchyard, although parts may date back to the 16th century and were altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. The walls are constructed of red brick, primarily in random bond, with some sections in English bond at the lower parts and Flemish bond at the upper parts. The structure forms a square approximately 50 yards long on each side.

The north side facing Roman's Place stands about 3 meters high and features a dogtooth cornice, nine brick buttresses, and an opening with a concrete lintel and wooden door. The five bays closest to the Churchyard are made of 16th to 17th-century brickwork, while the remainder is late 18th-century in Flemish bond. The west side adjacent to the Churchyard slopes from 3 meters down to approximately 1.8 meters and has a coping made of large tiles. The east side facing Lodge Road varies in height from 1.8 meters to 3 meters, has a ramped top that was partially restored in the 20th century, and includes ten brick buttresses. The lower courses of this side appear to be from the 16th century, while the upper sections are late 18th-century, featuring a mix of English and Flemish bond. The south side is approximately 1.8 meters to 2.4 meters high, made of 17th and 18th-century brickwork with plain coping. This area was formerly a walled garden for the Vicarage. Notably, two Roman urns were discovered on this site in 1840.
