Description

Granary, dating from the mid-18th century, with alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The structure is timber framed, with a ground floor built in soft red brick exhibiting Flemish bond detailing from the 19th century. The first floor is rendered on the south elevation and weather boarded on the remaining elevations. The roof is covered in concrete tiles with half-hipped gables. It is a two-story building with four bays aligned north-south. The front elevation includes a 20th-century door and metal windows. The left side elevation has a boarded door and a circular cat hole. The principal bridging joists feature pairs of joggled intermediate bridging joists at a 90-degree angle. Vertical section floor joists are jointed with housed soffit tenons, diminished haunches pegged through. First-floor access is provided by an internal winder staircase at the south end. The roof incorporates joggled framed side purlins with collars to the principal rafters, with all joints double pegged. Straight through wind bracing is present in the end bays. The first floor features granary bays formed by interrupted tie beams, framed into posts rising from the principal bridging joists to collars, along with straight braces from storey posts to tie beams. A series of chiselled carpenter’s marks are visible on the posts of each bay.
