Description
The Granary at Fristling Hall is a three-bay, two-storey granary built in the 18th century and earlier, with a single-storey outshot at the rear (south). It features a timber frame set on a red brick plinth laid in English bond and is clad with weather boarding. The west gable end has 19th-century framing, and the catslide roof is covered with 20th-century corrugated metal. The north-facing façade has a central door with a 20th-century window opening and a casement frame above. To the right of the door, there is a shuttered opening with 18th-century round-end strap hinges.
Inside, the studwork is primary braced and made of substantial scantling. The chamfered bridging beams have lambs tongue stops. The roof truss includes tie beams with collars, raking struts, and staggered purlins. Most of the frame is pegged, and there is extensive use of mortice and tenon joints. Additionally, there are face halved and bladed scarf joints at the wall plate, along with 18th-century iron strapping at each corner of the building.
This granary, with some 19th and 20th-century alterations, is associated with a 16th or 17th-century barn and a 19th-century farmhouse and outbuildings. While granaries are common in the country, the survival of a substantially complete 18th-century and earlier timber-framed example is of special interest.
