Description
The building is a byre, now used as a stable, dating from the late 17th century. It is timber-framed, covered with weatherboarding, and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The structure consists of four bays facing southwest, which are wide enough to accommodate two lines of animals. There is a lean-to extension on the northwest side. The byre is adjacent to other buildings to the northeast and southwest, which are not of special architectural or historic interest.
The exterior features two 20th-century halved doors and three 20th-century fixed lights. Inside, the hardwood frame includes unjowled posts. The northeast internal tie-beam has braces that curve in a serpentine shape, and it is tenoned and pegged. The middle tie-beam features arched braces. The wallplates show face-halved and bladed scarfs. The roof has queen struts supporting a clasped purlin design.
Notably, the studding of the northwest wall has been removed, merging the lean-to with the main interior. Some posts have been repaired with concrete plinths. The northwest pitch of the roof in the two middle bays has been altered at an earlier date; the original rafters were tenoned and pegged to an in-pitch purlin supported by the tie-beams, while other rafters extend over the lean-to at a continuous lower pitch. A gap in the mortices for studding in the northwest wallplate suggests that there was originally an access point for animals on this side leading to the road. This building is a rare survival of its type and period.
